An Ipswich man who committed 13 crimes told a court his life continued to spiral into drug use after he was convicted of assaulting a person with a car.

An Ipswich dad found himself back before court after committing a spate of ice fuelled crimes spanning from August 2020 to September 2021.

Twice police raided Chad Barry Evans’ Redbank Plains home and located small amounts of methamphetamine and pipes that has been used to smoke weed and crystal meth.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Brad Dick said on one occasion during a pat-down search police found a fake lipstick container used to hide meth and a glass pipe in Evans’ pocket.

Months after the raids Sergeant Dick said Evans was also caught driving with the dangerous drug in his system at West Ipswich during March 2021.

More recently on July 19, 2021, Evans and a man allegedly unknown to him tried and failed to steal $567.70 worth of groceries from Woolworths at Brassall.

Sergeant Dick said staff and members of the public chased Evans and another man down forcing them to ditch the trolley, although the refrigerated items had to be discarded costing the store $271.53.

Officers quickly tracked down Evans linking him to the crime as he and his cars’ registration were caught on CCTV, although when questioned about the incident he said he had just met the man and didn’t know he was going to do a runner.

The court heard Evans breached bail conditions numerous times, which he was on for a serious crime committed in Logan in 2015, although Evans was not officially charged until 2017.

The charge wasn’t finalised until November 2021 where the 36-year-old was convicted of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm at the Beenleigh courthouse.

Defence lawyer Christy Louden said she was instructed by the father of two that the assault incident and subsequent media coverage had led him further into drug abuse.

Ms Louden said Evan was medicated for schizophrenia and psychosis although his current treatment made him lethargic Evans would resort back to ice for a lift in energy.

Magistrate Robert Walker Ipswich noted Evans decade long criminal history was riddled with sporadic drug crimes and fines did not seem to deter his offending.

Evans pleaded guilty to 13 crimes including drug possession, drug driving, stealing, breaching bail, and was sentenced to 18 months’ probation and disqualified from driving for one month.

The unemployed man was also ordered to pay $271.53 in restitution to Woolworths.
