Greyhound breeding, training facility proposed near site of major racing centre

A 125-dog breeding and training facility has been proposed by a power force pair in the greyhound racing industry, as a huge new racing centre nearby takes shape.

A 56-acre property south of Ipswich could become home to a large-scale greyhound breeding and training facility, if a development application lodged with the Ipswich City Council is approved.

Experienced greyhound trainer Ned Snow and fellow trainer and former president of Capalaba Greyhound Racing Club John Catton have joined forces and submitted the application for a 125-dog facility at 763 Ipswich-Boonah Road at Purga, just a short distance from recently approved Greater Brisbane Greyhound Centre.

The site is also intended to operate as an ‘intensive animal husbandry’ and training facility, and would see several new litters of greyhounds bred and trained for racing purposes.

A 200m sprinting track, ‘bullring’, outdoor exercise yards and medical facilities are amongst the proposed changes to the land, as well as several parking spaces to join the existing dwelling on the land which will become residence to four on-site staff.

The proximity of the proposed breeding and training facility to the Greater Brisbane Greyhound Centre is a driving factor in the application, allowing trainers and the dogs to reside less than ten minutes away.

The $40 million Greater Brisbane Greyhound Centre was formally given the green light by Minister for State Development, Infrastructure, Local Government and Planning, Steven Miles in September last year, and works are set to begin this month.

Racing Minister Grace Grace heartily supported the approval of the centre.

“Racing at the Centre will be broadcast to 60 nations around the world, putting the industry in Queensland on show to a global audience,” she said.

“The community will also benefit from the construction of a multipurpose function centre that will be incorporated in the Centre’s design.”

The area surrounding the proposed site is home to several other breeding and kennel facilities, a factor that was drawn on in the application documents.
