Program gets Ipswich youth on the road to success

AN IPSWICH PCYC program that has helped get young people on the road to success is now changing lives for the better in Lowood.

AN IPSWICH PCYC program that has helped get young people on the road to success is now changing lives for the better in Lowood.

The launch of the PCYC's Braking the Cycle driver mentor program at Lowood this month has been hailed a huge success.

Somerset Regional Council has partnered with the Ipswich Police Citizen's Youth Club (PCYC) and Ipswich Community Youth Service (ICYS) to enlist the help of several volunteer mentors to deliver the program.

Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann was on hand last Monday to launch the program, which helps young people from disadvantaged backgrounds obtain their driver's licence.

"Braking the Cycle aims to provide young people with increased employment opportunities, community connection and driver education," Cr Lehmann said.

"This is achieved via a volunteer driver mentor program designed to support learner drivers without access to a supervisor or registered vehicle to complete their logbook hours."

The program is designed for young people aged 16 to 25 who have a current and valid learner's licence and are struggling to complete their logbook hours because of difficulties accessing a car or appropriate driving supervisor.

The Lowood program will be run through Council's Lowood Hub office at 24 Railway St.
