Police investigating fatal crash near Mt Hallen

LATEST: A quiet stretch of road between Gatton and Esk was the scene of another road tragedy yesterday.
The horror run of road crashes in the Ipswich region continued when a white hatchback veered off Gatton-Esk Rd at Mt Hallen, just before 10am.
The vehicle failed to negotiate a slight left-hand bend as it headed towards Gatton on the 100kmh section of road, smashing into a tree.
Firefighters attended to try and free the trapped driver, but paramedics declared the 90-year-old NSW man deceased at the scene.
He was the only occupant of the vehicle at the time.
Police from the Forensic Crash Unit and Scenes of Crime spent several hours at the scene, forcing the closure of Gatton-Esk Rd from Atkinson Dam Rd on the western side, to Esk-Hampton Rd on the eastern side.
Esk Sergeant Karlene Trezise said police did not know what caused the vehicle to leave the road.
"Until the Forensic Crash Unit conducts its investigations there is little that we can say," Sgt Trezise said.
The crash was the first fatal incident on Ipswich roads for the year, following from a terrible end to 2015, which resulted in five deadly crashes in October alone.
Twelve people lost their lives as a result of fatal crashes across the Ipswich police district in 2015.
UPDATE: Police are investigating the cause of a single-vehicle crash that has killed a man at Mt Hallen, in between Gatton and Esk.
A white sedan was travelling along Gatton-Esk Rd when it crossed onto the wrong side of the road and struck a tree about 10am Tuesday.
Firefighters attended to try and free the trapped driver, however paramedics declared the man deceased at the scene.

It is believed the vehicle was travelling towards Gatton when the crash occurred.
Police are working to ascertain the identity of the driver.
EARLIER: A man has been killed in an accident on the main road between Gatton and Esk this morning.
Police say a car ran off Gatton-Esk Rd near Mt Hallen about 9.48am, hitting a tree.
Firefighters attended to cut the man from the vehicle, however paramedics declared the driver deceased at the scene.
Forensic crash unit and scenes of crime officers from Ipswich will attend to conduct an investigation into the cause of the accident.
Gatton-Esk Rd is likely to be closed from Atkinson Dam Rd to Esk-Hampton Rd for several hours.
