A man has been flown to hospital and a busy stretch of highway west of Ipswich was closed to eastbound traffic Tuesday afternoon after a ute towing a trailer lost control.

Traffic travelling eastbound at Hatton Vale towards Brisbane on the Warrego Highway and Fairway Drive was diverted along Shaw Drive, following the crash which happened about 4pm.

Police said the male driver of the ute was trapped inside and had complaints of back pain, but was conscious and breathing well.

He was flown to hospital after multiple fire crews worked to free him.

A female patient was treated at the scene but did not require further medical attention.

Queensland Police had reopened the Warrego Highway by 6.30pm after reports of nearly 15 kilometres of backed-up traffic during peak hours.
