A Bellbird Park man has been released on bail after he allegedly struck a stranger outside a pub in Durack so hard the victim is now fighting for life, a court has heard.
Taueetia Raymond Sua, 26, was charged with grievous bodily harm on Sunday, July 14 after police investigations.
Richlands Magistrate Court heard on Monday, July 15, that Mr Sua allegedly struck a 44-year-old Inala man, whom he did not know, causing him to collapse to the ground outside the Lucky Tree Tavern on King Ave bout 1.30am.
The victim suffered significant life-threatening head injuries and was transported by Queensland Ambulance Service High Acuity Response Unit and critical care paramedics to Princess Alexandra Hospital.
He remained in a critical condition.
Magistrate Aaron Simpson said the charge was very serious.
“(The victim) has been taken to hospital and has sustained a series of significant injuries and may in fact pass away,” Mr Simpson said.
“But ultimately, with strong ties to the community, and the lack of other history, (under) these strict conditions you can be managed well on bail.
“There could be a temptation to flee the jurisdiction because of the serious nature of the charge.
“I don’t know whether you’ve necessarily done anything wrong, but I’ve got to make sure you stick around.
“If he (the victim) dies, the police will come and see you again about a different charge.”
Mr Sua was released on bail under strict conditions.
The New Zealand citizen surrendered his passport and was banned from international airport terminals or seaports.
He would also have to report to Goodna police station twice a week.
His matter was adjourned to September 2.
Police detectives appealed to any witnesses or anyone with footage of the area, including dashcam and CCTV, to come forward.
Investigations are ongoing.
