The man accused of an Ipswich CBD carjacking which lead to a siege in Bellbird Park on Sunday has had his court date delayed.
Anthony Beattie, 27, was scheduled to appear in Ipswich Magistrate’s Court this morning, May 24, for assault charges after police made an emergency declaration under the Public Safety Preservation Act (PSPA) at Bellbird Park Sunday night.
He is charged with two counts of seriously assaulting police while pretending to be, or being, armed with a weapon and one count each of armed robbery with violence, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and driving while unlicensed.
It has been alleged a woman was assaulted by the 27-year-old Redbank Plains man as she exited her vehicle on East St, Ipswich about 10.20pm.
Beattie allegedly took her car keys then took off in her car.
About an hour later, at 11.35pm, police officers found the stolen car parked outside a home on Jones Rd, Bellbird Park.
They began a search of the home and were confronted by a man allegedly armed with two edged weapons before he barricaded himself inside a room.
An emergency declaration was made under the PSPA at 3.35am Monday while officers negotiated with the man.
Special Emergency Response Team officers entered the house about 5.50am and took Beattie into custody.
In court today, Beattie’s defence lawyer said he displayed “seemingly symptoms of a mental illness” and requested he be taken to hospital for examination.
The magistrate said he was “reasonably satisfied the defendant would benefit from examination, and reasonably satisfied that the defendant has a mental illness”.
The magistrate made a mental health examination order for all charges except the robbery charge.
Beattie will be transported to Ipswich Hospital for a mental health examination later today.
