Laidley’s David Thulborn sentenced in Ipswich Court for masturbating at Rosewood train station

A man performed a disgusting act in “clear view” of people at an Ipswich train station after walking on to the tracks and taking his clothes off, a court has heard.

A Lockyer Valley man has faced court for masturbating in broad daylight at a local train station after walking on to the tracks and taking his clothes off.

Laidley resident David Huntly Thulborn, 60, faced Ipswich Magistrates Court for sentence on July 12.

The court heard Thulborn was at the Rosewood train station about 1.20pm on February 2 when he crossed over the tracks and took his clothes off.

Magistrate Sturgess said Thulborn then masturbated “in clear view” of members of the public, before returning to the platform.

The court heard his offending was captured on CCTV.

Four days later, Thulborn stole a truck from Martin Sand and Gravel in Gatton, the court was told.

Ms Sturgess said Thulborn, in a “somewhat strange and opportunistic” act, came upon the truck with its keys in the ignition and decided to take it.

Thulborn drove the truck through a chain fence securing the driveway. This also was captured on CCTV.

The truck was later tracked to an address in Westlake.

The court heard Thulborn told police a friend named “John” said he could take it.

Thulborn was on parole at the time for entering premises and stealing offences.

He was also on probation for stealing a ute, Ms Sturgess said.

She said Thulborn’s probation report stated that he had “denied having a substance abuse problem”.

“You, it seems, did not believe you needed any drug assistance,” she said.

Defence lawyer Matthew Fairclough said his client suffered from paranoid schizophrenia.

He believed he might not have been up to date with his medication at the time of his offending.

He said Thulborn had “limited recollection” of the offences but believed he might also have been adversely affected by alcohol at the time.

Thulborn pleaded guilty to one count each of indecent act in any place to which the public are permitted access, enter premises and commit indictable offence and unlawful use of motor vehicles.

He was sentenced to 12 months’ jail, with immediate parole eligibility.

His 149 days in presentence custody was declared time served.
