After a series of tragic life events caused an Ipswich mum-of-six to turn to meth, a court heard she was compelled to turn her life around after her daughter’s suicide.

Aged care worker Jodi Kareen Huls, 40 of Forest Lakes, was charged with supplying dangerous drugs in July 2021 after police discovered she had engaged in a bizarre trade with a friend, where she gave him a small amount of cannabis in exchange for meth.

At the time, she was also found to be in possession of cannabis and had recently smoked cannabis and ice with that same friend.

Huls provided police with her mobile phone and passcode where messages revealed she had supplied small amounts of cannabis and meth on five separate occasions over two days in July.

The court heard that Huls was introduced to cannabis at just 15 years old, after her brother died and that her meth use had only begun 14 months prior to her being charged in 2021.

A letter written to the court by Huls’ mother “candidly” detailed the immense impact that the meth use had on her life, after she quickly became addicted and spiralled out of control.

The addiction ultimately resulted in Huls becoming estranged from her six children aged between five and 21, but in March 2022, her adult daughter tragically took her own life, prompting Huls to kick the drug habit for good.

Huls barrister Dan Bodice, said that her daughters’ suicide made her realise that her drug use may stop her other children from wanting to maintain a relationship with her.

He said that she had been free from drug use for around 12 months and intended to remain so as she rebuilt her relationships with her children, one of whom lives with her again.

Judge Horneman-Wren sentenced Huls to two years’ probation.
