A Goodna father hit two police officers after they handcuffed him for threatening a housemate, a court has heard.

Jason Dennis Poore, 47, was charged with two counts of assaulting police officers, three counts of obstructing police officers and one count of wilful damage.

The Goodna man pleaded guilty on Wednesday, 4 July, at Ipswich Magistrates Court to all charges.

Magistrate Dennis Kinsella said Mr Poore damaged some garden furniture and a door on December 8 last year.

At one stage, he grabbed a knife and walked towards a housemate.

“The police, quite properly, were called,” Mr Kinsella said.

“They’ve seen you with the knife. There were certain concerns as to whether or not you were still concealing that knife.

“You were directed to drop anything that was in your hand.

“There was a perception that there was something in your hand.

“You, however, continued to move towards where the knife in fact was.”

Mr Kinsella said police handcuffed him after using tasers.

He said Mr Poore thrashed around with his hands, hitting two police officers in the head.

“You were then directed to the ground,” Mr Kinsella said. “There was further resistance.

“You ultimately broke free again and you ran from the police.”

He said police tasered Mr Poore again.

Defence lawyer Matthew Fairclough said his client had a problem with ice and alcohol.

“One of his older brothers passed away in October, 2023,” he said.

“They were very close and that loss certainly affected him ... around that period of time.

“He started using again after his brother’s passing.”

Mr Kinsella said Mr Poore was acting erratically during the incident.

“You’re clearly affected by some form of illicit drug,” he said.

“I understand from your perspective, you are in the midst of grief.

“It seemed in certain environments, you’d then turn to illicit drugs and that’s an unfortunate outcome for you going forward.”

He sentenced Mr Poore to five months’ jail, suspended for 18 months and 18 months’ probation.
