An Ipswich rugby league prodigy who had signed with the Gold Coast Titans before being hospitalised by a coward punch has told a court his rugby league training commitments led to legal hot water.

An Ipswich rugby league prodigy’s choice to prioritise his sporting career over his bail obligations has led him to face court.

Redbank Plains resident Treymain Clinton Richard Spry, 24, pleaded guilty in Ipswich Magistrates’ Court on October 12, 2023, to five breaches of bail.

Each of the breaches related to failing to report to the Ipswich police station.

He had been required to report twice a week while on bail for unrelated offending, the court heard.

The court heard he had been struggling to comply due with the orders and balance training committments

Magistrate Melanie Ho noted Mr Spry was committed to a career in rugby league.

However, he was hospitalised last year after being assaulted in Fortitude Valley.

At his Ipswich Court sentence, he told the court he had now fully recovered from that injury.

Mr Spry has played for the Tweed Heads Seagulls, and secured a two-year contract with the Gold Coast Titans earlier this year.

“I accept given your professional football career and training on the Gold Coast – that you train at least three times a week and you play on the weekend – that it has been difficult for you to meet that twice weekly reporting,” Ms Ho said.

“In my view, given your limited criminal history, there’s issues as to whether that condition was onerous.”

She said an “excellent court reference” from Brisbane player manager Simon Mammino stated any conviction recorded against Mr Spry would impact his future in the NRL.

Mr Spry received a six month good behaviour order, with a $300 recognisance.

No convictions were recorded.
