Police are investigating after an overnight blaze at an Ipswich football club, who believe it’s not the first time they have been targeted with a “deliberate” fire this year.
Ipswich Police were called to the scene at Western Spirit Football Club on Dale Rd, Camira around midnight and declared a crime scene this morning.
A police spokesman said there appeared to be a significant amount of damage, with multiple buildings burned.
Investigations are currently ongoing as they await fire investigators to arrive on scene.
A spokesman for Western Spirit Football Club said the blaze “destroyed” the club’s changing rooms and toilet facilities.
“Two fire trucks were on the scene, and the local area was covered in thick smoke,” the spokesman said.
A community member posted on Facebook they suspected the blaze was deliberate, as they heard “three loud bangs” before the facilities went “up in flames”
The Western Spirit Football Club spokesman said this was the second fire they suspected was deliberate at their Camira ground this year.
“In February, our storage container which held mowers, line markers, goal nets, and balls was set on fire,” they said.
They said the additional damage to facilities today would increase capacity pressures on their Kippen Park grounds in Goodna.
“As a club we’d obviously prefer investing our available funds directly to support junior players and reduced fees rather than re-purchasing damaged equipment,” they said.
“Sport is essential in giving kids options to not only keep fit, but to grow as part of a community.”
