A family, including two children, has been left shaken after a hit and run outside an Ipswich fast food restaurant last night.
The car collided with the family’s Toyota Landcruiser when running a red light at a major intersection close to Hungry Jacks at Redbank Plains around 6pm.
The force of the impact reportedly caused the family’s car to roll over – with two children inside at the time.
The police were already on the scene, as they had witnessed the car run a previous red light and had followed.
They activated their sirens after witnessing the collision and gave chase.
Police say the driver had not yet been caught, nor were there any suspects.
The victims — a woman, her partner and two children, aged five and seven — were assessed by paramedics but were unharmed.
Witnesses came to the aid of the family — one reportedly gave a blanket to the little girl while another gave toys from their own car to the children.
A relative of the victims took to Facebook to source information about the incident, and witnesses from the community flooded victims with support.
The woman involved thanked those who came to their aid.
“I just want to say a huge thank you to everyone that stopped to see if we were OK, especially to whomever seemed to pull a blanket from nowhere.
“It has helped keep our 7yo calm and get her to sleep.”
A witness, who asked not to be named, said she saw the police trying to catch the driver of the Commodore in the Town Square car park just minutes before the collision.
The driver apparently escaped through one of the main entrances of the car park towards the intersection where the collision occurred.
“It was certainly unnerving, given my daughter was with me. Thankfully we didn’t see the crash happen, just heard the loud bang,” she said.
Other witnesses commented on Facebook that the Commodore had dark chrome-coloured wheels, didn’t appear to have a rear licence plate, and that one of its bumpers was left behind on the road after the collision.
The victims have asked for anyone with more information to pass it on to the police.
