An Ipswich dad accused of involvement in a prison riot west of Brisbane may now be remanded in custody until next year waiting for a trial date, a court has heard.

North Booval dad Jarvis Michael John Kool, 22, stands charged with one count of riot or mutiny (unlawfully damages/destroys/attempts to damage or destroy property).

It is alleged Mr Kool was involved in the rooftop riot at Borallon Training and Correctional Centre on November 6 last year.

Mr Kool made an application for bail in the Ipswich Magistrates’ Court today, June 27.

His defence lawyer Matthew Fairclough said his client could be contesting the charge.

He noted the facts did not appear to mention Mr Kool participating in any property damage.

Mr Fairclough said his client appeared to only be accused of going up onto the roof with other inmates during the riot.

He said the charge did not reflect this, and at this stage his client intended to proceed to trial.

Mr Fairclough noted this would likely result in “significant delays” as there were no trial dates available in Ipswich District Court for the rest of the year.

He said Mr Kool recognised that he had had drug and alcohol issues in the past, but said he was willing to undertake drug and alcohol counselling if granted bail.

He further noted his client, who had been back in custody since January 2023, had a three-month old baby that he was “keen” to have a relationship with.

Magistrate Gary Finger noted Mr Kool had a five page criminal history and had been taken back into custody for breaching parole previously.

He said he ultimately wasn’t satisfied any bail conditions would sufficiently alleviate any of his concerns.

He refused Mr Kool’s bail application, and Mr Kool was remanded in custody for committal mention on July 21.
