Ipswich City Council has applied for approval to allow radio-controlled cars to race at its Ipswich Motorsport Precinct in Willowbank.
A development application was lodged on behalf of the council by local firm RPS, seeking a minor change to its approval at the precinct which is home to Queensland Raceway and Willowbank Raceway on Champions Way.
The application is signed off by senior council officer Sean Madigan.
The latest lay-out for the precinct was approved in January 2019.
“The proposed change is considered a minor change involving amendment of the approved layout to extend the motorsports activities to incorporate a remote-controlled car speedway area within the Ipswich Motorsport Precinct,” the application noted.
“This application relates to Lease D which is approved for dirt-based motorcycle racing.
“Design revision is proposed to amend the approved dirt-based motorsports area to include radio controlled cars and establish a new racetrack and drivers stand for radio control speedway activities and events within Lease D.”
The application noted the northern corner of Lease D fronting Champions Way is currently not being used.
The proposed space would be used by the Pit Pass Quarter Scale Speedway Club for quarter scale radio controlled speedway cars.
Works would involve creating a new 140 metre long and 5-6 metre wide deco gravel track, a driver’s stand and storage sheds.
“The existing approved access and informal car parking areas established off the tracks within Lease D provides adequate access and parking for the radio-controlled speedway area users,” the application noted.
“The existing structures associated within the approved dirt-based motorsports is proposed to maintained.”
It is proposed races would be held once a month on a Sunday between 10am and 4pm.
The maximum number of participants and spectators for each event is expected to be about 60.
Practice days for junior races would be held every second weekend with up to 15 people involved.
“The scale of the activity, involving quarter scale remote controlled vehicles will not increase the noise and amenity impacts beyond those of the existing Ipswich Motorsports Precinct recreation activities,” the application noted.
