MODERN society prides itself on many outstanding achievements, so I'm asking myself why it is in this "enlightened" age that we still have areas where something as basic as kerbside recycling doesn't exist?

Using my local authority's own figures, 40 per cent of all waste going into our kerbside rubbish is recyclable, which then ends up as landfill in Ipswich.

Somerset Regional Council tells us it has a policy on recycling but the only evidence of that would be the 39km each-way trip to a "recycling" centre at Coominya.

This would have to be an ineffective answer to what should be a simple solution. We all know there are things we can do better to limit packaging.

Milk will still come in cartons, bread will still be in bags and Vegemite will still come in jars, all of which are recyclable.

It's time to stand up and be counted, Somerset Regional Council. Let's not allow our beautiful corner of the world to fall behind. We can recycle and re-use to respect our local environment.
