One Mile Hotel memories crushed in a pile of rubble

THE One Mile Hotel moved a step closer to being consigned to the history books yesterday, with demolition beginning on some of the smaller buildings.

THE One Mile Hotel was consigned to the history books yesterday, with demolition beginning on some of the smaller buildings on the site during the day and the pub itself being destroyed during the night.

The demolition brought an end to more than 100 years of history.

To the dismay of some, the pub was never added to the heritage register, despite being reviewed by heritage experts back in 1991, and even included on Ipswich City Council's heritage trails as a site of significance.

The One Mile Hotel was established as one of Ipswich's first pubs, with the area once bustling with bullock wagons on route from Ipswich to the Darling Downs.

Although established in 1911, the hotel was re-erected in 1937.

The demolition job was approved by a private certifier and council was not involved in the decision to knock the pub down.

Exactly what will replace the pub remains a mystery, but there is widespread speculation that a service station will be built just off the busy intersection of Brisbane and Hooper Sts. Council has not yet received a development application for the site.
