NEW permanent speed cameras will be installed on the Warrego Highway through Ipswich in an effort to reduce accidents on a section of the highway the state government says has a history of serious crashes.

Four point-to-point cameras will be installed at either end of a nine kilometre stretch of the highway between Bundamba and Muirlea to monitor all lanes.

A department spokesman said the system is expected to be operational by the end of the year.

“Locations for point-to-point camera enforcement are selected by examining lengths of road that have a history of speed-related crashes,” he said.

“This section of the Warrego Highway has a history of speed-related crashes that resulted in fatalities or serious injuries.

“Both point-to-point cameras and mobile cameras are successful in reducing the number of speed-related crashes in Queensland.

“Both camera types complement each other. A point-to-point camera system reduces the incidence of speeding at a specific location, while mobile speed cameras provide speeding deterrence across the whole road network.”

The cameras on the westbound lanes will be 9.1 kilometres apart and separated by 8.9 kilometres eastbound.

The department spokesman said the total cost of the new cameras has yet to be finalised.

“Every death or serious injury is one too many, and we are committed to reducing the number of lives lost on Queensland’s roads,” he said.

“The ‘fatal five’ continue to be the leading cause of deaths on our roads.

“All motorists need to be aware of the fatal five and take them seriously: drink and drug driving, fatigue, inattention, not using a seatbelt and speeding.

“Speeding is one of the major causes of fatalities on Queensland roads.

“Speed limits are set and enforced to reduce crashes and save lives.

“It is not safe to speed in any circumstance and the Queensland Police Service is responsible for enforcing the rules.

“Everyone has a role to play in road safety and motorists are reminded to stick to the speed limits, abide by the road rules and drive to conditions.”
