A historic Ipswich hotel is vying for further expansions with a new beer garden, car park and bottle shop next on its list.

Tait Morton Johnston Pty Ltd submitted a development application on June 24 to expand the historic Prince Alfred Hotel in Booval.

The Prince Alfred Hotel has been an iconic landmark since its opening in 1842 before Ipswich had its name.

It has seen many faces and expansions over the years, from the hotel’s reconstruction after a fire in 1961, to the recent addition of Tap’d Bar in 2015.

In 2012, the hotel’s old bottle shop was replaced with the popular Char’d Steakhouse, leaving an opportunity to refashion a new bottle shop on the proposed expanded premises.

If the latest expansion plans go ahead, five residential lots will be fashioned into a new car park, bottle shop, and beer garden.

The lots include 6, 8 and 10 Alexandra Street and 9 and 11 Bergin Street — three of which are empty, while the other two currently contain houses.

A spokesperson for Tait Morton Johnston Architects said it was too soon to say what the plans were for the houses currently at the development site.

The new bottle shop will include a Harry Brown liquor barn and bulk goods store along the eastern boundary of the development site with a crossing to the new beer garden.

Plans for the beer garden include an outdoor bar, seating and children’s play area, with a new entry arch connecting to the new drop off zone and car park at the back of the hotel.

The master plan also shows a 653.8 sqm extension to the back of the existing hotel building, along with landscaping and fencing along the site boundaries.

A stormwater management plan was added to the application on July 4, which recommended earthworks to level the site, stormwater detention to manage increased run-off, and new driveways along Bergin and Alexandra Road to access the extended carpark.

The application is still in the early stages; it is in the confirmation period and waiting on the council’s approval.
