A mother, accused of leaving her baby to starve to death while allegedly on a drug binge, will remain in custody while lawyers and police organise the cross examination of witnesses.

Natalie Jade Whitehead, 35, charged with the murder of her baby and failing to supply necessities and misconduct by interfering with a corpse, was remanded in custody after her case was mentioned in Ipswich Magistrates Court this week.

Almost three years have passed since eight-month-old Dexter Wilton was found dead in his Raceview home, however his case is yet to make its way to the district court.

Ms Whitehead’s then partner Andrew William Campbell, 42, was also charged with the same offences after police were allegedly forced to track him down.

Magistrate Dennis Kinsella firmly warned the Department of Police Prosecution and lawyers to move the case forward.

But he said he would allow all parties more than four weeks to ensure police organised time for defence lawyers to organise the cross examination of witnesses.

The court heard because it was a large and complex case, more time than usual would be needed for the DPP to get organised.

An agent appearing on behalf of defence barrister Josh Fenton told the court, lawyers wrote to the DPP to request the cross examination of witnesses.

Magistrate Dennis Kinsella said, “I’ve given the parties a lot of wiggle room that means the responsibility falls on their shoulders to have all of this complied with, otherwise the court is going to have to be more interventionist in its approach”.

Baby Dexter was found dead in his home by paramedics on June 21, 2019.

In February, a Brisbane court heard he was dehydrated and malnourished and police will allege the pair forgot about the baby during a three-day drug binge.

Magistrate Kinsella set the case aside for a committal mention on Wednesday, September 14.
