CHOOSING A SCHOOL? Every single Ipswich school’s NAPLAN performance ranked

The test results are in for students across the whole of Ipswich- see how every Ipswich school has rated. READ THE FULL LIST.

New National Assessment Program in Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) data suggests a handful of Ipswich schools are performing well above average, while a majority are recording close to or below average results.

NAPLAN is a yearly test of students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9, which covers skills in reading, writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and numeracy.

An Australian Curriculum Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) spokesman said it would be the first time since the pandemic that schools and parents would have access to fresh data.

“In 2022, more than 500 Australian schools showed well above the average progress of students with the same starting score and similar backgrounds for at least one (area),” he said.

Ipswich Grammar School’s students achieved well above average in many NAPLAN areas.

Ipswich East State School was one of the region’s poorest performing schools, with most school levels scoring well below average.

However, it had one of the area’s lowest socio-educational advantage scores and cannot be compared with schools such as IGS.

ACARA chief executive David de Carvalho said parents should be mindful when comparing their children’s school to others.

“Too often, media organisations try to construct crude ‘league tables’ based on overall achievement without considering the schools’ level of socio-educational advantage,” Mr de Carvalho said.

“Such comparisons are meaningless.

“The schools that are punching above their weight are those that are achieving above expectation in terms of progress on where their students were two years ago, taking into account their level of socio-educational advantage.”

A number of schools in the region who performed extremely well in many skill areas including; Westside Christian College (total average score of 1171.2), St Peter Claver College (1109.6), Ipswich Grammar School (1039.2), Good Shepherd Catholic Primary School (978.4), Lowood State School (977), Camira State School (906), and St Francis Xavier’s School (884).

A number of schools in the Ipswich district who performed mostly well or below average in multiple skill areas included; Walloon State School (807.4), Brassall State School (799.8), Redbank Plains State School (791), Riverview State School (742.8), Ipswich East State School (735.4), St Augustine’s College’s Year 5 (486.6), Kruger State School Year 5 (440.6), Ipswich West State School Year 5 (431.8), and Ashwell State School Year 5 (398.6).
