An Ipswich criminal’s wild night of crime, which included a sledgehammer smash-and-grab operation at a Woolworths supermarket and the attempted entry of another, ended when he was mauled by a police dog and hospitalised, a court has heard.
Springfield man Michael John Sullivan, 28, fronted Ipswich Magistrates Court this week where he pleaded guilty to five offences including burglary, attempted burglary, unlawful use of a motor vehicle and obstructing police.
Sullivan, two co-defendants and a co-accused, who is yet to be sentenced, began their spree just after midnight on May 3 this year by attempting to smash their way into Woolworths Fernvale having arrived in a stolen black VW Jetta.
Unsuccessful after being disturbed, the four men then moved on to Woolworths Collingwood Park, where they gained entry and stole cigarettes and mobile phones.
About 2am, the court heard, police came across the four men’s wrecked vehicle which had crashed 10m down an embankment at the end of a road behind Ripley town centre.
Officers used a police dog to search for the suspects in the darkness and 400 metres into bush came across packets of cigarettes, Gatorade and discarded clothes and gloves.
Another 300m into the bush, the police dog detected Sullivan hiding in long grass.
He was bitten on the leg and taken to hospital for treatment, the court heard.
Sullivan has been remanded in pre-sentence custody since his arrest.
He was on parole at the time of the current offending.
Defence lawyer Dylan Hans sought a jail penalty that had parity to the sentences imposed previously for two of his convicted co-offenders Stevan Joshua Jeffery Munich, 29, a scaffolder from Springfield, and William James Moore, 28, from Logan Central.
The pair were sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment with immediate court-ordered parole for their roles in the cack-handed offending.
The pair remain behind bars for other offending, the court heard.
Describing the offences as brazen, Magistrate David Shepherd convicted and sentenced Sullivan to 12 months’ imprisonment with immediate parole-eligibility.
For the drink driving charge he was disqualified for three months.
