A MAN who knocked himself out by headbutting a wall also allegedly punched and kicked at paramedics trying to help him.

Police said several service vehicles rushed to a house on Brisbane Rd at Ebbw Vale about 6.30pm Thursday, after the man lashed out at medical staff as they tried to load him into an ambulance.

The patient was described as being agitated and passing in and out of consciousness when the ambulance arrived about 6pm.

He had sustained injuries to his head, elbows and hands.

A Department of Community Safety spokeswoman said both ambulance officers were allegedly pushed by other people at the scene.

“The paramedics were not injured in the incident and the Queensland Police Service has charged a man and a woman in relation to the offence,” she said.

Police allege there was another clash between officers and several other occupants of the house when they responded to the call for assistance from the paramedics.

A police spokesman said five people were arrested.

QAS Assistant Commissioner Jayne Barnes said any assault on a paramedic was inexcusable.

“Paramedics are there to help the community by providing emergency care to patients, not be assaulted and injured in the course of their duties,” Mrs Barnes said.

“It is extremely disappointing this sort of behaviour has occurred.”

Jade Teresa Stelling, 21, and Timothy Byron Stelling, 18, were both granted bail in Ipswich Magistrates Court yesterday.

Timothy, of Ebbw Vale, is charged with two offences of serious assault and two of assaulting or obstructing police.

Jade, of Willowbank, faces one charge of serious assault and two of assaulting or obstructing police.

The case is scheduled to next be mentioned on July 15.

They have not yet entered pleas to the charges.
