WORK has begun on a half-million dollar upgrade of Boonah's major streets.
Scenic Rim Regional Council has started work on the upgrade of the western side of Boonah's Church St between High and Walter St.
The $500,000 project will include an upgrade to stormwater capacity and the replacement of kerb and channelling, in addition to repaving and asphalt surfacing of the roadway between High and Walter Sts.
The water main on the northern side of the street will also be replaced and realigned on behalf of Queensland Urban Utilities.
Scenic Rim Mayor John Brent said the work to upgrade the stretch of road was part of the council's plan to upgrade the original historic streets of Boonah, and he urged patience from business owners and residents.
"Church St is one of Boonah's oldest thoroughfares and council received a great deal of positive feedback when improvements to the eastern end of the road were carried out," Cr Brent said.
"The upgrade of this remaining section, between High and Walter St, will complement the other main roads which circle the town centre - Macquarie St, Coronation Dr and Yeates Ave."
Division 5 councillor Kathy Bensted has welcomed the start of the upgrade work on the stretch of road just off Boonah's main thoroughfare, Yeates Ave.
"I am pleased to see council's commitment to our safe road networks will see the final link of Church S completed in the next couple of months," Cr Bensted said.
Given the nature of the Church St roadworks, council has warned of interruptions to services along the street.
However, these will be minimised as much as possible.
Pedestrian access along the road will be maintained to all businesses during construction of the upgrade.
But on-street parking on Church St will be impacted during working hours.
Traffic control restrictions will apply to Church St between 6.30am and 4pm throughout the duration of the roadworks, with council warning of possible delays to traffic.
Cr Brent has urged Boonah residents and motorists to be patient throughout the duration of the upgrades, and to observe traffic advisory signage and directions from council traffic control officers.
