An Ipswich man who worked as a relief teacher at various schools was jailed for the indecent treatment of three young girls.
Goodna man Glenn Norman Christofferson was entrusted with the care of the children as their tutor when he sexually assaulted them between 2002 and 2007.
The Ipswich District Court heard the sex offender manipulated his way into the good graces of one girl’s family and gained trust as a family friend.
Judge Rinaudo said the girls’ had been aged between nine-years-old and 16-years-old, at various stages of the offending.
One girl began being sexually abused by Christofferson when she was 12-years-old.
Judge Rinaudo said the 49-year-old touched the girl’s chest and bottom in a sexual manor, as well as exposing the girl’s breasts.
Another girl was nine-years-old when Christofferson began sexually assaulting her.
The girl was filmed by Christofferson as she changed.
Judge Rinaudo said the other girl was 12 at the beginning of the sexual assault which included a similar style of offending.
Although, Christofferson stuffed her bra with tissues and drew on her nipples during a bizarre and confronting incident.
The court heard when police asked Christofferson why he abused the girls, “Lust” was his retort.
The youngest girl, now a mother herself, told the court in a victim statement that her life would never be the same and she held great fear for herself and her children.
Judge Rinaudo noted it was likely the other two women were also suffering from trauma and the inability to trust others.
“It was clear there was a gross breach of trust, you were a teacher of one of the girls, and later a family friend and have used your position of trust.. for self-gratification,” Judge Rinaudo said.
The court heard the Rockhampton born man grew up in a loving family and was “highly” educated as he had a bachelors degree in education and business, and a masters degree in accounting and business.
Christofferson’s legal representation told the court her client was terribly sorry and guilty for what he had done which was why he handed himself into police and confessed.
Soon after, the court heard members of the community heard about the sex offenders crimes and began harassing and threatening Christofferson.
Taking into account the early plea of guilty, remorse, confession, mental health issues, promising rehabilitation prospects, and low risk reoffending status, Judge Rinaudo sentenced Christofferson to two years imprisonment.
After spending four months in jail, Christofferson’s sentence will be suspended, although it will hang over his head for three years.
While Christofferson’s mother and Christian Church representative watched from the gallery in support on Thursday, February 10, the sex offender pleaded guilty to 17 charges of the indecent treatment of a child under 16 as a career.
