A wide shop counter behind a 50s TV makes for a vintage look with modern twist at an Ipswich cafe.

At 1.5 metres deep, the Retro Diner’s new counter helps enforce social distancing and is only one part of the cafe’s recent revamp.

The Brisbane St cafe oozing everything old school is one of the latest CBD businesses to be treated to a subsidised makeover.

The Retro Diner is among 11 businesses to undergo a facelift as part of the Ipswich City Council’s $137,000 Pilot Facade Improvement Program.

Ms Parsons said the upgrades would not have been possible without the funding.

“I definitely loved the opportunity to be part of the program as it gave us a chance to upgrade our business, which I otherwise would not have been able to do,” Angie said.

The venue boasts a fresh coat of paint, bright colour scheme, revamped floor at the front and new light box.

“The front entrance is now a spotty black, not that old greyish tiling anymore,” Ms Parsons said.

She said the shop’s bright new facade stood out to passing traffic.

“We ended up painting the whole front of the storefront,” Ms Parsons said.

“We have changed the front to look more retro so it’s all a very bright white and a baby blue.

“It really stands out now – you can’t miss it.”

CJ Vogler and Son; heritage-listed building at 80 Brisbane Street; In House Bathrooms and Ipswich Massage and Herbal Spa have also been upgraded after the council matched contributions of up to $15,000 to each business.

Chair of the Ipswich Central Redevelopment Committee and Division 3 Councillor Marnie Doyle said the program had helped encourage business and building owners to invest in the CBD.

“It is wonderful to see so many diverse local CBD businesses partner with council to improve their facades and our shared streetscape,” Ms Doyle said.

“These revitalised shopfronts not only provide a welcome boost to local businesses but will help draw more visitors and customers into Ipswich Central.”
