Ipswich German-inspired bar, eatery for sale

A popular bar and eatery near Brisbane known for its German beers, home-baked pretzels and other treats is up for sale.

Popular Ipswich bar and eatery Heisenberg Haus, known for its German beers, home-baked pretzels and other treats, is up for sale for the first time since opening almost a decade ago.

The city’s first German bar/restaurant, it proved a hit from the start with fans lapping up the modern decor, friendly service, large range of beers and unique take on pub food.

Founders Dale and Karyn Fechner created a venue true to their German roots, offering classics such as wild boar, sauerkraut balls, fresh baked pretzels, pork knuckle, kassler, kartofelpuffer and wurst tasters.

A street-front coffee outlet was opened several years ago.

Online reviews and ratings platform TripAdvisor listed Heisenberg Haus among the seven top dining options in Ipswich.

Mr Fechner, whose son Andrew now runs the venue, declined to comment.

However it was understood there were negotiations with several interested parties for the restaurant, which turned over more than $750,000 per year.

Listed for $450,000 through Finn Business Sales agent Luke Mansbridge, Heisenberg Haus has become a well-known haunt for foodies and beer lovers on Brisbane St in the CBD since opening in 2015.

At the time Andrew Fechner, who ran the front of house, said the idea was to mix German classics with Aussie favourites.

“The building lent itself to a restaurant bar and there’s nothing else like this in town,” he said.

Located in a heritage precinct, the stylish fit-out from the Fechners included raw brick and plenty of wood which was included in the sale price.

A key selling point was the loyal staff who had helped build a following from Ipswich and surrounding areas, some of which like Marburg had a big population of ethnic German residents, as well as tourists.

Another selling point was the lack of comparable, significant competition in the area.

There was scope to extend the current opening hours which included lunch from Friday to Sunday, midday-2pm, and dinner from Wednesday to Sunday, 5pm until late.
