Ipswich death: Man killed in workplace incident at Polar Ice at Lobb Street in Churchill

A 56-year-old man has died after being crushed by a truck at an Ipswich business early this morning.

A man was killed in a workplace incident at the Polar Ice premises in Ipswich in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

The man killed in a tragic workplace accident at an Ipswich factory in the early hours of Tuesday morning was from Logan.

Initial investigations found he was crushed to death by a truck at the Polar Ice premises on Lobb Street in Churchill about 3.50am.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the former ice manufacturing facility but there was little they could do for the man, who police have identified as a 56-year-old from Loganholme.

Paramedics assessed the man at the scene of the accident at 3.52am but he died at the scene.

Police have blocked off the entrance to the business as investigations begin.

Acting Inspector Lee Fortune said police were called at 3.57am.

“A male person was located deceased (when police arrived),” he said.

An investigation at the Ipswich facility has begun.

“Initial investigations indicate that the truck he was operating has rolled back and crushed him.

“The Forensic Crash Unit and detectives attended the scene and commenced investigations with follow up investigations being conducted by Workplace Health and Safety to determine the cause of this incident.

“A report will be prepared for the coroner.”

The man’s family has been notified.

Polar Ice owner Jack Berry sold the business last year and the site was leased to a Tasmanian meat company.

Areas where ice was packaged and stored is now used to process lamb meat brought up from Tasmania to be sold on to retail meat companies.
