An Ipswich dad faced court for 15 drug charges which included the serious crime of supplying marijuana to his 16-year-old daughter.
The Queensland Times cannot legally name the man to protect the identity of his child.
Ipswich District court heard the man was growing the drug in his backyard, and had supplied his neighbour with an ounce, and cupcakes laced with marijuana.
The charges came about after police raided the man’s neighbour’s and found incrementing text messages on a phone.
The Crown said officers later raided the man’s home and located 106g of marijuana, two small plants, and two mature plants during October 2020.
Defence barrister Wilson said as a result of the charges, his client’s marriage broke-down and noted the father was diagnosed with chronic pain and was using marijuana to self-medicate.
Mr Wilson said the man’s daughter approached him for the drugs and threatened to find them elsewhere if he didn’t hand them over.
Judge Richards said the charges were serious yet the circumstances were unusual as his neighbour was also a chronic pain sufferer.
“It’s unfortunate that both of you just didn’t get the drug legally,” she said.
“The supply to your daughter is obviously much more serious. You are supposed to actually guide her, not help her to do the wrong thing.
“In your favour… you have no criminal history and you’ve obviously been a hard worker for most of your life – things are a little different now that you are suffering from chronic pain.”
The middle aged man pleaded guilty to 15 charges which included; supplying drugs to a minor, possessing drugs, supplying drugs, and producing drugs.
Judge Richards sentenced the man to 18 months imprisonment which was immediately suspended.
The sentence will hang over the man’s head for two years.
