Ipswich City Council has responded to locals calls to fix a “dangerous” road where a mobility scooter rider died in a crash last week, as police continue to investigate the tragedy.

Raceview residents raised safety concerns about Robertson Road last week after a fatal crash on Thursday, January 4.

An 80-year-old mobility scooter rider died at the scene after colliding with a car around 1pm.

The 86-year-old woman driving the car was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police investigations are still underway and the woman has not been charged.

In the days since, locals have laid bouquets of flowers at the scene in tribute to the man who died.

The incident occurred at a section of road where there is a pedestrian refuge to cross – although it is not a marked zebra crossing.

Nearby residents claimed that particular stretch was dangerous, as cars would turn nearby corners off Wildey and Cooinda streets without looking.

Multiple residents also reported hearing cars speeding at night, with one man estimating speeds would often reach “100km/h at least, sometimes more” on the 60km/h stretch of road.

“It’s just a matter of time before it happens again,” he said.

Ipswich Mayor Teresa Harding responded to residents’ concerns today, January 9, along with their suggestions to improve the road’s safety.

“This was a tragic accident and, on behalf of council, I send my thoughts and prayers to the families of those involved,” Cr Harding said.

“Council has sought information from the Queensland Police Service regarding the accident to determine if the road conditions contributed to the crash. QPS has yet to respond.”

“Of course, Council will consider all findings in order to make our roads safer for motorists and pedestrians.”

Residents suggestions included installing traffic lights at the Wildey Street and Robertson Road intersection, and installing a speed camera along the road.
