Ipswich college celebrates multiple TAS competition successes

West Moreton Anglican College students are celebrating having won champion sporting honours in TAS and Junior TAS competitions.

WestMAC was led by the Year 8A girls touch football team, one of three College sides to achieve Term Three premierships.

The undefeated 8A WestMAC side sealed their premiership with a 14-0 victory against St Paul’s School at Karrabin in the final round.

The 9B girls touch team were also crowned TAS champions for WestMAC, who were pipped for the overall champion touch football school title by only nine points.

The Year 9A Girls and 7B girls touch teams similarly completed strong seasons to finish title runners-up respectively.

WestMAC Principal Geoff McLay said the wonderful results were a reward for a thriving team culture as well as hard work and detailed preparation from both students and coaches.

“Our students receive access to specialised coaching sessions from internal and external staff,’’ Mr McLay said.

“Every WestMAC student receives an opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge.

“For the touch football season, we focused on a strategy of building basic skills and developing teamwork, and this paid off for many of our teams including 8A and 9B.’’

Mr McLay said WestMAC achieved record participation levels for Term Three sport with 30 teams taking part in the TAS competition.

WestMAC’s volleyball program was also successful with the Year 7/8 B Girls team winning a premiership while the Senior 3rds side claimed second place.

In football, the First XI boys side finished runner-up in a hard-fought competition.

The First XI, coached by Western Pride general manager Pat Boyle, needed to win their final round match to secure the premiership. WestMAC unfortunately lost a tense match 2-1 to St Paul’s School.

In the TAS Athletics, WestMAC achieved two age group championship crowns at the Queensland State Athletics Carnival (QSAC).

WestMAC also finished runner-up for the overall girls title, spearheaded by the 13 years girls who won their age group championship.

Brooke Egan, Layla Fulton plus twins Tiana and Charlotte Parsons combined to win the 13 years relay team with a personal best performance (54.33).

WestMAC also won the 16 years age boys title led by all-round brilliance from Hamish Hunt, who claimed the 16 years male age champion.

In the Junior Athletics Carnival, WestMAC students were the only College to produce Junior TAS record-breakers following several standout performances.

The 11 years boys and 11 years girls teams also secured championships respectively.

Ruby Bohen (Year 6) threw 28.04m to overhaul the six-year record of 27m on her way to securing gold in the 11 years girls discus.

The 11 years boys relay team of Caleb van Deventer, Jacob Cox, Joseph Carpenter and William McLay broke the two-year relay record of 57.93, set by Sheldon College, with a sizzling 57.17 effort.

“We have a huge level of participation at training which is the basis for our success because this has ensured a strong team culture and encouraged a focus on enjoyment for students,’’ Mr McLay said.
