When police tried to assist a drunken young woman on a night out she resisted and dislodged an officer’s protective Covid face mask before kicking him in the thigh.

However, the use of alcohol to deal with ongoing anxiety issues was partly blamed when Tameeka Price appeared before Ipswich Magistrates Court for sentence.

Tameeka Price, 20, from Leichhardt, pleaded guilty to assaulting a police officer at Ipswich on August 29.

Prosecutor Sergeant Trent Voigt said police were called just after midnight to a hotel on Brisbane St because of a street disturbance.

Price and two other women were seen to exit a parked car. When she tried to re-enter a hotel she attempted to fight a security guard.

She was glassy-eyed and appeared to be affected by some substance, the court heard.

Sgt Voigt said that when she was being arrested for suspected intoxication Price swiped at the officer’s face mask which was dislodged.

She was handcuffed and while being placed inside the police pod she kicked out and struck the officer in his thigh.

Price was allowed to sober up inside the watch house before being released.

Defence lawyer Renee Smith cited her young age and sought a fine with no conviction recorded.

Ms Smith said Price instructed her that she had been drinking alcohol to try and deal with her anxiety issues.

And visited her doctor the day before the court appearance to get medication.

Ms Smith conceded that Price had prior similar offending involving a public nuisance charge in February 2020, and a matter earlier this year.

Magistrate Dennis Kinsella said police were only trying to do their job and as an intoxicated woman the officers were likely concerned for her vulnerability that evening and only trying to assist Price.

Mr Kinsella said that as a youthful offender she would benefit from supervision.

Price agreed to complete a six month supervised probation order. No conviction was recorded.
