Hospital and health giant Mater has unveiled a first look at their new health hub coming to Springfield in mid-2023, which is set to become a new major training epicentre for Mater Education and will include a childcare centre, cafe and gym.

Mater has announced an agreement with HealthCo Healthcare to co-own and secure a 10-year lease for the 4150 sqm Springfield development.

Currently under construction, the Mater Health Hub will incorporate services currently offered at Brookwater Health Clinic, including specialist consulting rooms, along with a new Mater Pathology, a large GP practice, chemist, childcare centre, cafe and gym.

Mater Executive Director of Residential Care and Community Services Dr Fiona Hinchliffe said the health hub would mark a new era in healthcare delivery for Mater by deviating from the traditional hospital environment.

“Being located outside of the four walls of a hospital allows us to empower people to live better lives through providing the community greater access to new and existing preventive programs and health care services,” Dr Hinchliffe said.

“We want to provide the Springfield community with innovative and contemporary health and wellbeing services that cater for the whole family, eliminating the need for people to travel to Brisbane, Ipswich or even Gold Coast to receive the care they need.”

The health hub is also set to become a new home to Mater Education, providing local students with opportunities to learn through hands-on experience at the nearby Mater Private Hospital Springfield.

Mater Education’s General Manager Education and Training Barry Hankinson said the health hub would include state-of-the-art simulation rooms for student training to ensure local nursing students are “set up for success”.

“Mater is committed to growing a local healthcare workforce in Springfield and providing a career path for young people living in the area,” said Mr Hankinson.

Dr Hinchliffe said the new hub, along with Mater’s Springfield Private Hospital expansion, “demonstrates Mater’s continued investment and commitment to ensuring that this thriving community has access to the comprehensive family services it needs and deserves”.

The new hub is expected to open in July next year, at which time services currently offered at Brookwater Health Clinic will transfer to the new location.
