A "MOMENT of madness" has landed an Ipswich woman in hot water after she swiped a serving of sushi from a supermarket.

Ipswich Magistrates Court heard Chynna Leota was also caught driving while disqualified a few months later.

Police prosecutor Senior Constable Narelle Lowe told the court Leota had gone to Woolworths at Indooroopilly Shopping Centre on February 7 and stolen sushi.

"Appeared to be in the company of a male person, she's selected sushi and proceeded to the check out," Snr Cons Lowe said.

"The male has paid for a drink and they've left the store without the female paying for the sushi."

The court heard staff followed Leota and noted she climbed into a car.

Police conducting patrols at Redbank Plains pulled over the car Leota was driving and questioned her about the sushi.

"A check of her details showed she was currently unlicensed - she said she had driven to the shops," Snr Cons Lowe said.

Chynna Sharee Soloia Leota, 20, appeared in court to face two charges, one of unauthorised dealing with shop goods and one of unlicensed driving, repeat offender.

She pleaded guilty to both.

Magistrate Jacqueline Payne told Leota she had seemingly acted in a "moment of madness" when she stole sushi.

"You lose your good record for the sake of $10 sushi, for which you now have a criminal conviction, which is insane," Ms Payne said.

"It's something that's so avoidable and is a great shame you've decided to do that in what seems to have been a moment of madness."

Leota was fined $600 and disqualified from driving for one month.

A conviction was not recorded.
