Historic Ipswich home Booval House sells for $1.8 million in off-market sale

One of Ipswich’s most famous houses has sold off-market after an eager buyer approached the home’s former owner. SEE INSIDE.

An Ipswich surgeon has become the new owner of one of Ipswich’s most famous homes.

The property changed hands following months of negotiation between the buyer and the house’s former owner.

Located at 14 Cothill Rd, Booval, the home affectionately known as Booval House oozes history and mid-1800s elegance.

It sold while off-market when one of the home’s many admirers approached the owner in mid-March, offering to buy it.

After months of negotiation, the sale was finalised on July 12, changing hands for a cool $1.8 million.

Real estate agent Damian Freeman said it was one of the suburb’s most notable residential sales.

“The property is heritage listed and it has its own chapel,” he said.

“It’s magnificent, it’s massive and it’s on over an acre.”

The home sprawls across an enormous 4,818 sq m block of land and comprises of two main components, including the main house and an east wing annex.

It features six bedrooms, six bathrooms, five car spaces, a music room, a drawing room and a library.

Built between 1857 and 1859, the restored home has attracted a slew of awards for its beauty and wealth of history.

Mr Freeman said the property was the first house to be built in Booval.

“It was built for the bank manager of the Bank of Australasia Ipswich branch,” he said.

“(Since then) it hasn’t had a lot of different owners.”

After changing hands a few times, the property was sold to the Catholic Church in the early 1920s and opened St Gabriel’s Convent, which housed the Sisters of Mercy.
