A GERMAN hand grenade dating to the First World War was removed from a Raceview home on Monday by the Army.

A GERMAN hand grenade dating to the First World War was removed from a Raceview home yesterday by the Army.

A 76-year-old woman, who did not wish to be named, said her father had brought the grenade back from the war.

"My elderly mother lived here with me and my husband and family before she died," the woman told the QT.

"Down the track I cleaned out her drawers and I came across this thing, and I didn't know what it was."

After asking a few people she decided to wrap it up and put it in a box in a back shed.

"But then my daughter who lives in Canberra rang me last night after she'd seen a documentary about war relics and how they can be dangerous," she said.

"She said I should ring police."

The Raceview lady followed her daughter's advice and the Army did the rest.

She said it was a good example for other people who had similar artifacts.

"They said that sometimes these weapons come back to Australia and they have been cleaned out, but then crystals can form and they can be just as dangerous," she said.
