Snake breeding season has kicked off early this year and wet weather is forcing them from their usual habitat, resulting in Ipswich residents finding the reptiles a little too close for comfort.
A number of large non-venomous carpet pythons have been relocated from Redbank Plains, Goodna, and Karalee over the past month.
Snake catches warned the amount of snakes popping up across southeast Queensland would be “absolutely hectic” as the retiles begin their breeding frenzy.
On Saturday, October 15, two people were rushed to hospital in serious conditions after they were bitten by snakes west of Ipswich at Linville and Lockyer Waters.
However, residents should not be alarmed if they spotted a snake as they were not always venomous and were unlikely to strike unless provoked.
Local snake catchers said the best thing to do was stay calm, not bother the snake, and call a professional to relocate the reptile to its intended habitat.
If it is safe to do so, residents should take a photo of the snake and send it to a snake catcher for identification.
