Funds pour into area's sport clubs

SPORTING clubs across the Lockyer and Brisbane valleys are set to benefit from a range of State Government initiatives.

SPORTING clubs across the Lockyer and Brisbane valleys are set to benefit from a range of State Government initiatives.

Three clubs in the Lockyer Valley will receive funding to the tune of more than $300,000, while Esk will host an Athlete Recovery workshop.

The Gatton Soccer Club, Laidley and District Netball Association and Lockyer Valley Polocrosse clubs have been granted money by the Sport and Recreation Infrastructure program.

Gatton Soccer Club receives $135,690 to install competition standard lighting; the Laidley Netball Association received $176,000 to repair and upgrade six courts, and the polocrosse club received $12,300 to repair its two Laidley playing surfaces.

Sport Minister Phil Reeves said the funding was a major boost to the clubs.

"This is great news for the organisations and community, and I'm sure the new projects and facilities will be greatly appreciated," he said.

Sportsmen and women in Esk will also be able to attend the Athlete Recovery workshop this week.

The workshop will be targeting athletes, parents, teachers and club volunteers and will examine injury recovery for athletes across a variety of sports.

The Esk library will host the workshop on Wednesday from 6pm.

"This is a great opportunity for the sports community to learn more about sport fitness and recovery guidelines for young and established athletes," Mr Reeves said.

"The sports community will also get the opportunity to discuss issues currently facing the industry.

"Developing sport at the grassroots right up to the elite level heightens our chances of hosting events, and reinforces our reputation as the Champions State and the Events State as well."
