Firies go green

THE people of Prenzlau were out in force on Monday to help "green" their local fire brigade.

THE people of Prenzlau were out in force on Monday to help "green" their local fire brigade.

An open day was held at the Prenzlau Fire Brigade to green the station's grounds and teach people about fire prevention and the environment.

More than 300 native seedlings were planted by Prenzlau locals, fire brigade members, Greening Australia and the day's organiser, Powerlink GreenWorks.

Prenzlau fire brigade first officer Dave Wandel said the day had been a great opportunity for locals to see the inner workings of the station.

"We all got the chance to get our hands dirty and do our bit for the environment," he said.

"Amongst the hard work, the kids also had fun in the shed looking at the trucks, getting their faces painted and planting some trees."

Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann said the community's support for the day showed their support for the firefighters.

"Prenzlau Rural Fire Brigade provides a vital community service in fire risk education and rural and bushfire management," he said.
