A search for a much-loved family pet has ramped up three days after thieves ransacked a house in broad daylight.

Members of a Fernvale family were left grief-stricken after a burglary left their house trashed and their pet dog gone without a trace.

An ordinary Monday became a living nightmare for the Kramer family, who came home to find their windows smashed, the front gate left open and one of two pet dogs roaming outside the property.

Sammy, the family’s four-year-old Maltese dog, was home at the time of the break-in but was nowhere to be seen when the family returned.

Owner Lynda Kramer said the family couldn’t gain access until police had conducted their investigations.

“The most traumatic thing for me was not being able to go in to look for Sammy,” Ms Kramer said.

“It was a good while before I could go in and I didn’t know if he was in there hurt, injured – I wanted to go to him.”

Inside, the home was barely recognisable.

“They had pulled everything out of the cupboards so you couldn’t see the floor in my house,” Ms Kramer said.

“There was clothes, things everywhere – you literally had to climb over blankets.

“I thought maybe Sammy was under something, maybe he had been buried under it or shoved somewhere.”

Ms Kramer said she couldn’t tell if Sammy had hidden or run away.

“He would have been cranky but he’s very timid and may have hid,” she said.

“Given how they smashed through the house, he would have been scared.

“He was so scared he (defecated) on my bed and all the way through to the bathroom, which he never does.”

Mr Kramer said it was still unclear whether her dog had been stolen.

In a harrowing twist, the thieves also took the ashes of her loved ones.

“They stole my necklace, which has my dad’s ashes in it … They took the ashes of my passed dog,” she said.

“I want them to know I’m not angry – I can’t be because people do things for a reason and things happen in people’s lives to make them feel they have to do things.

“But if I were to get a message to them, put him in a dog park at Fernvale, if you don’t want to be identified, or take him to a vet.

“We just need him home.

“We had the drone out to check he isn’t hurt and lying in a paddock somewhere.

“We left a trail of shirts and things for him to smell so he can find his way home.

“We haven’t stopped searching since Monday – I stay out until 1am or 2am.”

Sammy has been declared stolen since the incident.
