Ipswich State High coach Shane Harris welcomes a rare opportunity to celebrate two semi-final successes at the same time.

That’s because this afternoon’s Walters Cup and Langer Reserves finals will be played on adjacent Wynnum fields side-by-side.

The minor premiership-winning Ipswich State High Langer Reserves tackle Wavell on field 1 as Ipswich’s fourth-placed Walters Cup combination tackles first placed Keebra Park today.

Both Wednesday games are being live streamed at 2pm on this website as part of News Corp’s ongoing NRL Schoolboys rugby league coverage.

“I think it will be a pretty cool experience,’’ Harris said.

“It’s the first time we’ve had two teams playing this kind of fixture and playing side-by-side.

“Hopefully both teams get up and it’s a really good moment in the sheds where we both sing the team song together.’’

After beating Redcliffe 36-6 last week to lock up a top four spot, Harris acknowledged Keebra Park as the competition pacesetters.

“They are a very good team,’’ Harris said, known for his astute analysis.

“They are a team that’s got a good hooker, a couple of good props and a couple of nice guys out wide that have got a fair bit of strength and speed about them.

“They deserve first place so it’s going to be a tough game for my boys.’’

However, Harris was encouraged by his team’s lead-up effort against Redcliffe.

“The boys played really well,’’ he said.

“It was nice to finish off round 7 with a nice good win there.

“I think we take a lot of confidence out of the way we played last week.’’

In an all-round team performance, Harris rated Brave Taualai among his most consistent performers this season.

“He’s a big, solid, fast strong prop,’’ Harris said. “His reach is tough to handle so he’s been a really important part of what we are doing in our attack.’’

Harris said LJ Nonu “was probably the best centre in the comp’’.

“He’s very fast, very strong and just really confident in that he will back himself.’’

Ipswich’s co-captains fullback Jeriah Vagana and forward Oliva Iaulualo have also paved the way qualifying for the finals.

“Those two lead by example, their actions,’’ the coach said.

Harris said making the grand final would be a wonderful reward to finish the schoolboy competition.

“I put a realistic expectation on my group this year,’’ he said, having previously played in the Broncos Cup.

“If we can finish in the finals, that is a really good result for us.

“Now we are at, my instruction to the boys is just enjoy every game as they come.

“If we get the result we want, enjoy the grand final and just really enjoy competing with the best teams in South East Queensland really.’’

An added bonus is the young footballers get to travel to different venues together.

“The boys love the bus,’’ Harris said. “Some boys nap, some boys play on their phones and other boys are just happy to kick back and listen to music.’’
