David Thornton alleged murderer Bobby Weaver in another delay

The neighbour of a former Ipswich teacher, charged with his murder, is yet to have his day in court despite being arrested more than two years ago. Here’s why.

RAW: Bobby Andrew Weaver extradited to Queensland

There have been further delays in the case of Bobby Andrew Weaver – the man accused of killing Ipswich teacher David Thornton in 2019.

Mr Weaver, now 26, was charged with the murder of Mr Thornton, a 58-year-old maths and science teacher, in April 2019.

He was also charged with interfering with a corpse.

Mr Thornton was reported missing by his family in March 2019.

His body was found in a buried freezer on a property at Parker Street, Goodna, the following month.

Mr Weaver was extradited to Queensland from Byron Bay a short time later and charged.

Despite the charges being laid more than two years ago, the matter is yet to make its way to the Supreme Court.

The matter was again mentioned in Ipswich Magistrates Court on Wednesday by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Weaver’s lawyer Erin Dwan sought an adjournment as a result of a change in his senior legal representation.

Ms Dwan said the defence case would now be done in-house by Legal Aid and new legal counsel was being briefed in the case with the barrister requiring a further six weeks to consider the material.

A DPP legal officer said it did not oppose the defence application although the matter had been around for some time and with Legal Aid since June last year.

The officer said the large brief of evidence had previously been disclosed to the defence.

Magistrate David Shepherd said he would not give any legal direction but it may be considered if there was no further progress in the matter by its next mention date.

He adjourned the case for mention to late October. Weaver was remanded in custody.
