A YOUNG man has been refused bail after being charged with Covid public health offences.

Daniel Clayton Donald Murray-Whitehead, 22, from Silkstone, appeared in custody before Ipswich Magistrates court charged with failing to comply with Covid-19 public health direction at Leichhardt on Friday August 6; contravening a requirement of a public health emergency at Leichhardt; three counts of failing to comply with bail reporting conditions (at Cairns and Brisbane); two counts of failing to appear at court; and two counts of obstructing police.

Appearing by video-link form the Ipswich police watch-house, Murray-Whitehead did not make any pleas to the charges.

His lawyer Sally Jenkins sought bail on his behalf.

However, prosecutor Sergeant Trent Voigt said police opposed bail because he posed a risk of failing to comply.

Sgt Voigt said Murray-Whitehead is alleged to have given police a false name and failed to report to police as part of his existing bail conditions.

“And he was not complying with the chief health officer’s Covid direction,” Sgt Voigt said.

“He struggled with police when officers tried to arrest him.

“He has shown no compliance with police or the chief health officer’s directions when given to him.”

Ms Jenkins said he was aged 22 and had spent four days held in custody since his arrest in Leichhardt.

“He is hoping to finalise his matters as soon as possible. He doesn’t want to disappoint his daughter,” she said.

“He doesn’t want to return to prison. He instructs he will be happy to comply with orders and will live at Silkstone.”

Magistrate Andy Cridland, after reading police documents, said he failed to comply after receiving bail on a jail order in January and this gave the court no confidence.

He found him to be an unacceptable risk.

Bail was refused with Murray-Whitehead remanded in custody with his matters to be mentioned on August 23.
