Tributes flow for Silkstone man Nick Kaillis after Logan head-on crash

An Ipswich family has been forced to make the confronting decision to turn off life support for one of their loved ones after after he was seriously injured in a head-on crash in Logan.

Family members of an Ipswich man have made the heart-wrenching decision to switch off his life support a week after he was knocked unconscious in a Logan crash last month.

Nick Kaillis was due to visit his mother on the night of the crash but he never made it.

The 45-year-old, from Silkstone, was left in critical condition after his car and a utility travelling in the opposite direction on New Beith Rd collided about 9pm on June 23.

Mr Kaillis was rushed to Princess Alexandra Hospital where he passed away on six days later, June 29.

His husband, Adam Morgan, said Mr Kaillis was minutes away from his mother’s place when the accident happened.

“From what the nurses were telling us in the hospital, he was knocked unconscious instantly and didn’t wake up from there,” he said.

“He was on life support for about a week and we had to make the decision to switch off because his injuries were not survivable.

“We held out hoping that there would be some chance, but his skull was broken.

Nick Kaillis was en route to his mother’s house when he was badly injured.

Mr Morgan said he and “Nikos’’ married nine years ago.

“We owned a cleaning and support work business, so we would help people with disabilities,” he said.

He said the family was not well off so he set up a fundraiser to seek help from the community for funeral expenses.

The family was quoted $10,000 for the funeral, which was currently on hold until they could pay for it.

“That’s what she’s (Mr Kaillis’ mother) been quoted for the cremation and the funeral service,” he said.

“We’re just trying to get some help towards that at the moment.”

They raised nearly $2000 in about a week.
