30 Ipswich Year 6 primary school leaders reveal hopes for 2022

Ipswich’s incoming primary-school leaders have revealed their hopes for the new year, including building confidence in younger students and being positive role models. Meet 30 pupils ready to rock 2022.

As the school year draws to a close, Ipswich’s incoming Year 6 captains are preparing to lead and motivate their fellow students in 2022.

Little leaders from across the region have shared what they are looking forward to most in the new year, and what they hope to achieve as captains.

AMBERLEY DISTRICT STATE SCHOOL

William:

“I want to make everyone feel welcome, to not only learn but have fun every day,” William said.

“I’ll do this by starting some Interhouse competitions like handball and hoop shooting contests.

“I also want to encourage everyone to come to school eager to learn. This will include starting a research club. In 2022, I’m most looking forward to all the new events.”

Jasmine:

“I want to ensure every student gets the opportunity to get the best education they can in a friendly, safe and fun environment,” Jasmine said.

“I’m also looking forward to introducing some fun activities in 2022 and helping out wherever I can. In 2022, I’m most looking forward to representing my school in the best way I can as a leader!”

Nathan:

“I hope to be a great role model for other students at my school to encourage them to soar high every day,” Nathan said.

“I’ll always set a great example for others by doing the right thing and helping others to do their best. In 2022, I’m looking forward to pushing myself out of my comfort zone and trying my best.”

Amber:

“I want to become the best leader and role model for others in the school,” Amber said.

“I also want to help everyone to soar high. I hope to do this by helping others when they need help, supporting all in our school and always being kind to others.

“In 2022, I’m most looking forward to achieving to the best of my abilities.”

CAMIRA STATE SCHOOL

Finlay McDonald and Audrey McPhee:

“I’m Finlay McDonald and I’m Audrey McPhee and we have been elected school captains of Camira State School in 2022,” Finlay and Audrey said.

“We believe strong leaders are good role models, leading by example and we are an embodiment of our school values of Respect, Responsibility and Resilience.

“Next year we plan to work collaboratively with the Student Council to give students a voice and focus on fundraising efforts to enhance the school environment. These include selling icy cups to raise money to purchase additional Robotics equipment and garden beds to grow vegetables to use in our tuckshop.”

GLENORE GROVE STATE SCHOOL

School captain Rachel Rule:

Rachel Rule has been at Glenore Grove State School since Year 1 and is currently 11 years of age.

As a school leader she is striving to lead with kindness and respect for both the staff and students.

She represented Glenore Grove as the Birriwel Sports Captain this year and has been an exemplary example of a role model, applying herself in all areas of school life.

Rachel has set herself a goal to fundraise as a student leader to improve the basketball courts and to work with the younger students during her playtimes.

School captain William Saal:

William Saal began at GGSS this year and has shown exemplary behaviour and respect for those around him since he began.

Will is 10 years old and would like to lead Glenore Grove students to be the best version of themselves.

He plans to lead by having a caring and compassionate attitude and encouraging all students to have a growth mindset and face all challenges with a positive attitude.

He would like to develop a collaborative leadership team that works together to brainstorm and solve issues together and to continue to develop GGSS into the best school in the district.

Vice-captain Silas Nevins:

Silas Nevins, 11, has been a student at Glenore Grove since Year 2.

As a school leader he wants to use his social personality to work with students of all year levels.

He wants to demonstrate leadership skills of kindness where he will assist his peers by listening to their issues and helping them to solve them using the Glenore Grove High 5.

Vice-captain Kai Parlett:

Kai Parlett, 11, began at Glenore Grove State School at the beginning of this year.

As a school leader he wants to show kindness to others and lend a hand where needed as well as be a role model for others.

Kai was the Indigenous school captain for 2021 and applied himself to all areas of school leadership. Kai wants to work with others to ensure GGSS is a great school to be part of.

IPSWICH WEST STATE SCHOOL

School captains

Sophia:

“My name is Sophia. In 2022, I will be one of the School Captains at Ipswich West State School,” Sophia said.

“In my role I want to add to our supportive community by helping our younger students. I believe in setting a high standard through my words and actions.

“One of my main goals in 2022 will be increasing our student council fundraising and working as a team to identify where the funds could best be used, to support students in the playground or classroom.”

Emily:

“Hi, my name is Emily. In 2022, I look forward to being a School Captain at Ipswich West State School,” Emily said.

“I hope to make other students feel happy and welcomed as part of the Ipswich West State School community. I want to continue to earn teachers’ and students’ trust and be known as a reliable student and leader.

“I applied for this leadership opportunity because, I enjoy taking on new challenges and responsibilities. I am looking forward to working with everyone in our leadership team in 2022!”

Jonah:

“My name is Jonah. I will be representing Ipswich West State School as one of our School Captains,” Jonah said.

“As a new leader I would hope to set a high standard. I would like to assist in increasing our knowledge and programs related to S.T.E.M.

“I look forward to helping our Prep students transition to their new school, letting them know that they already have a friend if they ever need a hand.”

Mitchell house captains

Lindsay:

“My name is Lindsay and next year I will be House Captain for team Mitchell,” Lindsay said.

“As a House Captain, I hope to encourage all students to participate in as many school events as possible and participate in different types of exercise. To improve their health and wellbeing!”

Laney-Lee:

“Hi my name is Laney-Lee. I will be one of the House Captains for team Mitchell in 2022,” Laney-Lee said.

“I enjoy being active and hope that I can help our younger students learn what it means to be part of a school teams.

“I would like to encourage our younger students to play a range of different sports to build their confidence.”

Mishka:

“My name is Mishka. I have accepted the position of Mitchell Captain in 2022,” Mishka said.

“Our school a welcoming place, my goal in 2022 would be to continue to welcome others, building strong relationships.

“I would like to be a leader who can show others how to persevere and that inclusion is important. I hope to be there to help the students learn new things and help them to achieve their best.”

Sturt house captains

Kobe:

“My name is Kobe. In 2022 I will be one of the House Captains for the Sturt team,” Kobe said.

“I hope to teach our younger students a variety of new skills including touch football, basketball and hockey.

“I like to participate in competitive sports and look forward to leading my team to victory in all competitions!”

Anabella:

“My name is Anabella. In 2022, I will be representing Ipswich West State School as one of the Sturt House Captains,” Anabella said.

“It is important that we encourage our students to work as a team and to be active every day.

“I look forward to supporting students to be brave and have the courage to participate in school events as well as competing to the best of their ability.”

Noah:

“Hi, my name is Noah. I have accepted the position of Sturt House Captain in 2022,” Noah said.

“I enjoy all sports and participating in school events. It is important to me as a leader to encourage Sturt students to get involved and experience all the fun that the school can offer.”

Senior leaders

Kiarra:

“My name is Kiarra. In 2022, I will be a Senior Leader at Ipswich West State School,” Kiarra said.

“Leadership is important at our school as we help others and grow in our confidence through our leadership role.

“My goal in 2022 as a Senior Leader is to be there for people when they need support.”

Summah:

“My name is Summah. I am going to be one of our Senior Leaders in 2022,” Summah said.

“I would like to be the leader who can show our Prep students around the school, helping them feel more confident and teaching them our school rules.

“As a leader I look forward to working with our teachers who make our school a fantastic place.”

REDBANK PLAINS STATE SCHOOL

Jireh Pita:

Jireh, 11, has been a Redbank Plains Panther since he was in prep. Jireh is looking forward to going into Year 6 in 2022 and hopes to inspire other students to uphold the school values by setting the example through his own actions.

Tala Niko:

Tala, 10, joined the school recently, in Year 4, but has made a positive impact with peers and teachers. Tala is also looking forward to starting Year 6 in 2022. Tala is a confident speaker and wants to listen to the student body and would like to solve problems.

Both students are excited for the challenge leadership brings and would like to influence students to achieve the best results they can and be responsible members of society.

THE SPRINGFIELD ANGLICAN COLLEGE

Lailah Beattie:

“I am excited and honoured to be sharing a College Captain role with Sanuk Athuraliya, in 2022. As College Captain, I look forward to representing The Springfield Anglican College, being a role model and working with the teachers, the College community and fellow students to develop my leadership skills such as teamwork, goal setting and public speaking,” Lailah said.

“My journey at TSAC from when I first started Kindergarten to now, has been memorable and rewarding.

“As College Captain, I hope to encourage as many students as possible, to challenge themselves and to also take on the opportunities available, so that they too can have a memorable journey at The Springfield Anglican College.

“I also want every student to know that I (along with my fellow Year 6 students), am a friend and someone they can talk to and trust.”

Lailah said she looked forward to working with the younger students next year alongside her fellow Year 6 leaders.

“Together, we will support the Kindergarten and all primary students in their learning, through leading by example and modelling the College values,” she said.

“When I think back to working with my senior buddies, I have good memories of playing and learning with them and inspiring to grow up and be ‘just like them’. I am excited to now be able to return the gesture to the students on the Primary Campus.

“As College Captain, I will enjoy and take pride in my extra responsibilities. I will confidently represent the school at special events and lead chapel services. I am also excited to invest time and work with the Leadership Team to support the College community in charity events, fundraising for the school and raising awareness for important days such as Day for Daniel and anti-bullying.

“Together, we can do great things for our school and the greater community.”

Sanuk Arthuraliya:

“As a College Captain, I am most excited that I will be able to help students and teachers in our College community,” Sanuk said.

“I am very excited to attend the GRIP Leadership Conference. This conference will allow me to meet with other school captains and hear about what they’re doing and share our leadership missions.

“I am looking forward to leading our College in the weekly Chapel services and other special events. These events will show everyone that I am good at public speaking and I can embrace and tell students about my goals for the school.”

Sanuk said his goal as a co-captain for TSAC was to show students they need to embrace all experiences.

“I also hope to show students that being kind and generous to others, will be great for everyone,” he said.

“I hope to be a great role model for all students, and they will want to a Year 6 Leader one day too.”

WESTSIDE CHRISTIAN COLLEGE

Captains: Isabel and Hendrik:

“I hope to encourage more opportunities for our students to connect across our primary school,” Isabel said.

“I hope to include our students with additional needs in more school activities, to help them feel they belong more in our school,” Hendrik said.


Vice-captains: Claire and Oscar:

“I hope to brainstorm more creative and new ideas to raise funds to support worthwhile charities to help people in the community,” Claire said.

“I hope to try new things, such as House competitions, in like mathematics and not just Sports, to encourage House spirit in other areas,” Oscar said.

WEST MORETON ANGLICAN COLLEGE

Stella Walsh:

Stella, 10, could not resist the opportunity to apply for the Junior School Captaincy role because as a community-minded member of WestMAC she was excited about being involved in all aspects of the College.

As a keen member of WestMAC’s swimming squad, a passionate participant in the Bella Voce choir, talented trombone player in WestMAC’s Concert Band and Year 5 and 6 Band Immersion program band and a Junior School Dance Crew representative who achieved a very highly commended in this year’s Ipswich Junior Eisteddfod, Stella loves being involved in the College’s rich extra-curricular life.

“I love all the opportunities at WestMAC for everything you can be involved with, all the fun things. As captain, I would love to introduce even more events for students to be involved with,’’ Stella, a student at WestMAC since Prep, said.

Stella, who was recognised with the Year 4 to 6 Academic Encouragement Award, also has a strong sense of kindness and community spirit and is keen to be a role model for younger students.

“I felt the opportunities to be a captain would be fun, I want to help around the school and I’m looking forward to help raise money for good causes with fundraisers,” she said.

“I’m excited about being a leader and a positive influence in the school.’’

Caleb van Deventer:

11-year-old Caleb, an Olympic Games 2032 sprinting hopeful, was excited about the opportunity to become WestMAC’s Junior School Captain because he wanted to be an approachable and caring leader for the younger students.

“I aim to be a positive role model for younger students so the little kids have someone they can talk to and trust,’’ Caleb, who has been at WestMAC for three years, said.

There are many reasons why younger students would look up to Caleb as a representative sporting champion and WestMAC’s 11 Years Boys Athlete of the Year and Cross Country Boy Runner of the Year. He was also recognised as Touch Football Year 5/6 Boys Red Most Valuable Player this year.

Caleb, as the 11 years The Associated Schools (TAS) Junior 100m champion (13.24), was also part of WestMAC’s 11 years relay team which broke the TAS Junior record (57.17).

The talented multi-allrounder also represents WestMAC in soccer and rugby, participates in swimming training, plays flute as part of the Year 5 and 6 Band Immersion Program band, is a member of the award-winning Junior School Dance Crew, loves WestMAC’s outdoor education program and wants to lead fun and active opportunities outside the classroom for students at lunchtime and after school.

“I love how at WestMAC you have a bunch of opportunities, and you are not restricted by focusing on one thing. but you get the opportunity to explore so many different hobbies and interests. So as Junior School captain I want to make Junior School fun so students can do even more fun activities,’’ Caleb said.
