A DRAMATIC photograph by a QT photographer has been named as one of Queensland's best news images of the past year.

Queensland Times photographer Claudia Baxter's image "You're surrounded" won the best news photo in a regional or community newspaper at Saturday night's Clarion awards.

Ms Baxter's picture of Ipswich police, with weapons drawn, arresting a man in a car last June beat photos by two nominated Gold Coast photographers.

"It's very special. I really didn't expect to win," she said.

"My chin hit the floor when my name was called out last night.

"The whole thing is a bit of a blur. I don't really remember going up there to receive the award. I was very much in shock, I think!"

The judges said Ms Baxter's "professional coverage of the event, under the obvious threat of personal injury, has enabled the newspaper's readers to witness the unfolding of a dramatic event in the safety of their own surroundings."
