City cowgirl barrels 'em again

IPSWICH'S teenage cowgirl Cheyenne Whitwell claimed her second consecutive title in front of a home crowd at the National Rodeo Association National Finals Rodeo at Brothers Leagues Club on Saturday night.

With the weather holding out, more than 1000 people made their way to Brothers for the second last round of the rodeo finals.

Ms Whitwell, 15, took out the open barrel race title for the second straight year over rival Kim Clarke.

She also increased her lead in the All Round Champion Cowgirl standings with only a single round remaining.

She will compete for the All Round title at the final NRA rodeo of the year in Caboolture next weekend.

Ms Whitwell wasn't the only local to succeed in front of a home crowd, with former Mt Tarampa resident Steve Doneathy clinching his first national title in steer wrestling at the event.

Event organiser Jason Hall said the event had been a huge success.

"The weather held off and we had around 1000 people turn up, which was great," he said.

"There was a really good atmosphere and some great action."

The annual rodeo was moved to a different weekend this year after the Nambour event had to be changed.

However, Mr Hall said the day will be back to its usual weekend next year.

Two of the bulls ridden on the weekend, Rockstar and Suicidal, were unable to be ridden by Anthony Ellem and Jason Ross, the two cowboys who made the attempt.

The failure of the pair to tame the beasts has meant they will finish the season unridden.

Suicidal has yet to be ridden for the required eight seconds so far in his career.
