Ipswich City Council has handed over the keys to the heritage-listed Hotel Commonwealth in the CBD, also known as Murphy’s Town pub, as the Nicholas St Precinct overhaul draws to an end.

Built in 1910, the landmark has had a $16 million refit to meet modern trends.

Venue manager Sarah Knopke said her team was “hopeful that the doors will open in October”.

“The handover of the keys means we are a step closer to opening,” she said.

“With the fit-out to now be completed, we do not have a set in stone opening date as yet.”

Ms Knopke also revealed management was advertising for a head chef.

“With regards to a menu, we will be paying homage to old school recipes — with a modern twist,” she said.

Visitors could expect a modern take on traditional pub grub, plus a boutique bar, intimate function settings, live music and more.

However, it would still stay true to its roots.

Council bought the property for $400,000 in 2014 as part of its plan to redevelop the city centre.

According to the latest council report on the Nicholas Street redevelopment it spent about $16 million renovating and expanding the venue.

“The Commonwealth Hotel has made significant progress during May and June, with many key milestones achieved,” the report noted.

“Interior construction is substantially complete, including all walls, surfaces, doors and building services.

“Additionally, lifts, dumbwaiters and car park line marking, bollards and lighting have all been installed.

“Inspections by QFES (Queensland Fire and Emergency Services)/Fire Brigade and Energex have been successfully completed, ensuring the project meets all safety and compliance standards.

“Furthermore, NBN and APA have finalised installations for internet and gas services respectively.”

The council handed over another major tenancy at the Nicholas Street Precinct to cinema giant Hoyts on June 20.
