Approved: Ipswich's largest-ever church

AUGUSTINE Heights is set to be the home of one of Queensland’s biggest churches.

AUGUSTINE Heights is set to be the home of one of Queensland's biggest churches.

The Ipswich City Council has approved a 1200-seat Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints centre, colloquially known as Mormonism, on the corner of Augusta Parkway and Leon Capra Drive.

The 2000sq m church will have the biggest seating capacity of any Ipswich church and will rank among the state's largest.

A Church of Latter Day Saints spokeswoman said the building would be the headquarters for the Centenary "stake", the church's name for a collection of congregations, which is centred on Ipswich's eastern suburbs.

Western Ipswich is already home to a separate stake in Brassall.

The Centenary stake is one of the south-east's newest, established in 2007, while the Ipswich stake is one of the oldest, set up in 1981.

Stake president Adam Hannant said the church was expanding rapidly in the area.

"The church is growing so fast and needs new facilities to help us deal with that," Mr Hannant said.

"It will have a full recreation centre, as well as satellite equipment for stake conferences that will see more than 1000 people attend."

Mr Hannant said there were close to 3500 church members in the stake.

Council Planning and Development chairman Cr Paul Tully said the development would serve the needs of the church well into the future.

"The centre will include all necessary administrative facilities for church operations across the local area," he said.

Cr Tully said the church was positioned to take advantage of the booming growth suburbs in Ipswich's east and showed churches' faith in the region's future.
