Just 19 days after being released from prison, an Ipswich man was using meth daily and taking part in an “abhorrent” early morning armed robbery in a stolen car.
Alesana Clifford Chubb, 27, was sentenced in Ipswich District Court on Wednesday for his role in driving a stolen car, threatening a man with a gun, breaking into another man’s home and stealing his car keys at gunpoint.
Chubb and a male passenger drove a stolen car “aggressively” down a street towards another vehicle at 5am on February 13.
The cars stopped and Chubb’s passenger exited the car, armed with a shotgun which he pointed at the other driver, who managed to “escape”, the court heard.
Soon after, Chubb and his co-offender broke into another man’s house, because they “liked the look” of the car parked outside it, Judge Alexander Horneman-Wren said.
The co-offender aimed the shotgun at the man inside his house while Chubb demanded the man hand over his car keys and cash.
The man did not have any cash but handed over the keys.
Chubb drove off in the first stolen car while the co-offender stole the man’s car.
Police intercepted Chubb and found he was in possession of items stolen from Woolworths and other items suspected of being stolen.
He was on parole at the time of the offending and was also driving while disqualified by court order.
“(Chubb) habitually offends while subject to court orders,” Crown prosecutor Amanda Robinson said.
She said Chubb was returned to prison to serve out his previous sentence and had been in custody for about 21 months.
Chubb pleaded guilty on Wednesday to enter dwelling with intent by break at night while armed in company, armed robbery in company, threatening violence – discharge firearms or other act at night, stealing and two charges of receiving tainted property.
He also pleaded guilty to unlawful use of a motor vehicle – use for indictable offence, driving without a licence while disqualified by court order and driving without a licence while disqualified by court order – repeat offender.
The court heard Chubb began using marijuana at 17 or 18 and meth at age 21.
Chubb became addicted and was using a “gram or so per day” of meth at the time of the offending, but had remained clean since.
The 27-year-old completed a white card, a certificate II and worked in the landscaping unit while in custody.
Judge Horneman-Wren said Chubb’s offending was “disturbing” and “abhorrent”.
“One man was confronted with a gun on the street as he drove to work at 5am,” he said.
“Another had his home invaded … car stolen and was threatened at gunpoint in his own home.”
He said Chubb had been granted parole three weeks before this offending which was an aggravating feature.
He also said Chubb had been in custody for a total of 36 months since March 2018, spending only 232 days in the community in three years.
“(That is) a very long time for a young man to be in prison,” he said.
He gave Chubb a head sentence of three years and three months to be served cumulatively on the sentence he was already serving for previous offending.
He set his parole eligibility date for November 10.
Chubb was disqualified from driving for four years.
